Everyday Radicals Week 2
Everyday Radicals – Week 2
Theme: The Radical Invitation to Become Apprentices of Jesus
Primary Text: Luke 5:27–28 (with broader context)
1. Icebreaker – Everyday Invitations
Question:
What is something in your life that required more than a one-time decision—something you had to learn into over time (a trade, parenting, a skill, a relationship)?
2. Contextual Reflection – Why This Was Radical
Jesus was acting within a well-known rabbinic system, where only the best of the best were invited to follow a rabbi—and women were excluded altogether.
Question:
How does knowing the Jewish apprenticeship system change the way you hear Jesus say, “Follow me,” to everyday people like fishermen, tax collectors, and women?
3. Scriptural Reflection – The Invitation and the Response
Read Luke 5:27–28 aloud.
Question:
Levi “got up, left everything, and followed.”
What stands out to you about Jesus’ invitation—and what might have made Levi’s response both costly and compelling?
4. Personal Application – Apprenticeship vs. Conversion
The sermon contrasts modern evangelical emphasis on conversion with Jesus’ call to apprenticeship: being with Jesus, becoming like Jesus, and doing what Jesus did.
Questions:
How have you primarily understood following Jesus—as a moment of belief or as a lifelong apprenticeship?
What difference does that make for how you view growth, failure, and faithfulness?
5. Church Application – Following Together
Jesus did not invite people to admire him, but to follow him—and to be formed into people who would represent God in the world.
Question:
If Reunion truly sees itself as a community of apprentices (not just converts), what practices, priorities, or expectations might need to shift—both personally and as a church?
Closing Prompt
Invite a moment of silence and reflection for people to consider: What might be the “net” or “booth” Jesus is inviting you to loosen your grip on as you continue to follow him?
