Church Week 1

The following questions are simply a guide to your conversation. If there are things that jump out of the core text and or sermon please discuss whatever your desire.

Jesus never asked us to sign a doctrine test. He asked us to confess him as King and follow him from wherever we're standing.

Core Text: Matthew 16:13-20

Discussion Questions:

  1. If a stranger sat down next to you this week and asked, “so what's your church actually about,” what would you honestly say?

  2. Read Matthew 16:15-16 aloud: “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

    1. What's the difference between believing things about Jesus and actually confessing him as King over your life?

  3. Consider this statement: Most of the things competing for the throne in our lives are evil on their own like scripture, a leader's voice, a political conviction, even our own desires. Problems arise when good things wear a crown that isn't theirs.

  4. Take a moment in prayerful silence to consider what “king” is most often competing with Jesus for the throne in your own life right now?

  5. It took Peter roughly three years of following Jesus before he could say that confession with conviction.

    1. Where are you on that timeline right now, and does knowing it took Peter three years change the pressure you put on yourself?

  6. Jesus told Peter, “I will build my church,” not “you will build it.” What would change in how you carry your week if you actually believed the outcome was never resting on you?

  7. What's one direction you need to turn toward Jesus this week, even a small one, and who in this group will you let check in on you about it?
